Family Sponsorship

Family sponsorship is a key component of Canada's immigration law, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.

To sponsor a family member, the sponsor in Canada must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident of Canada.

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Live in Canada, or plan to return to Canada when the sponsored relative arrives.

  • Prove they have sufficient income to support all the family members they intend to sponsor, demonstrating they can meet basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

Eligible Relatives for Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor the following family members:

  • Spouse, Common-Law Partner, or Conjugal Partner: Includes same-sex and opposite-sex relationships. The partner must be at least 18 years old.

  • Dependent Children: Includes the sponsor’s children or those of their spouse/partner. To be considered dependent, a child must be under 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship. Children over 22 can be considered dependents if they have been continuously full-time students or have a disability.

  • Parents and Grandparents: Includes biological or adoptive family. A multi-year cap exists for applications, and a lottery system may be used when the cap is reached.

  • Other Relatives: In specific situations where a sponsor has no living relatives to sponsor and no relatives in Canada, they may sponsor one relative of any age or relationship.

Sponsorship Process

Application Package: The sponsor and the sponsored relative must submit a complete application package that includes forms, supporting documents, and proof of relationship.

Financial Responsibility: The sponsor must sign an undertaking promising to financially support the family member(s) for a period, which varies depending on the age and relationship.
